# Benwell Vallum Crossing

## Image Caption

The Vallum Crossing at Benwell in western Newcastle is a stone-built causeway, where the road from the south crossed the Vallum earthwork (a steep-sided and flat-bottomed ditch running the length of [Hadrian's Wall](https://www.worldhistory.org/Hadrians_Wall/)) on its way to Benwell fort (*Condercum*). The Vallum could only be crossed at the forts, where a causeway and a gate limited access to [Hadrian](https://www.worldhistory.org/hadrian/)'s [Wall](https://www.worldhistory.org/wall/)'s military zone under the officers' watchful eye.
