The Vallum Crossing at Benwell in western Newcastle is a stone-built causeway, where the road from the south crossed the Vallum earthwork (a steep-sided and flat-bottomed ditch running the length of Hadrian's Wall) on its way to Benwell fort (Condercum). The Vallum could only be crossed at the forts, where a causeway and a gate limited access to Hadrian's Wall's military zone under the officers' watchful eye.
