Monmouth was the illegitimate son of [Charles I of England](https://www.worldhistory.org/Charles_I_of_England/) and led the failed [Monmouth Rebellion](https://www.worldhistory.org/Monmouth_Rebellion/) against [James II of England](https://www.worldhistory.org/James_II_of_England/).
