A map illustrating the rise and expansion of the Bronze Age Shang dynasty of China in the second millennium BCE following the overthrowing of the Xia dynasty. Established around 1600 BCE, on the North China Plain, the Shang ruled by a single centralized government, a hereditary monarchy. They moved their capital many times (at least five) before finally settling on the ancient city of Yin (modern-day Anyang). The Shang dynasty was conquered by the people of Zhou, who came from farther up the Yellow River.
