A detail of a turquoise [mosaic](https://www.worldhistory.org/Mosaic/) mask representing [Xiuhtecuhtli](https://www.worldhistory.org/Xiuhtecuhtli/), the [Aztec](https://www.worldhistory.org/Aztec_Civilization/) [god](https://www.worldhistory.org/God/) of fire, 1400-1521 CE. The mask is of cedar wood with mother-of-pearl eyes, conch shell teeth and once with [gold](https://www.worldhistory.org/gold/) leaf on the eyelids. (The British Museum, London).
