[Gold](https://www.worldhistory.org/gold/) wreaths that imitate natural ones come mainly from royal tombs in Macedonia, [Asia Minor](https://www.worldhistory.org/Asia_Minor/) and southern [Italy](https://www.worldhistory.org/italy/). The crowning of the dead with a wreath signified that they were worthy of being rewarded with eternal life after [death](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Death/).

The preference for a particular plant species was presumably related to the deity worshipped by the family of the deceased. Wreaths of myrtle are associated with [Aphrodite](https://www.worldhistory.org/Aphrodite/), [Demeter](https://www.worldhistory.org/demeter/) and [Persephone](https://www.worldhistory.org/persephone/).
