The emergence of Spain as a global imperial power began with the dynastic union of the crowns of Castile and Aragon under [Isabella I of Castile](https://www.worldhistory.org/Isabella_I_of_Castile/) (reign 1474–1504) and Ferdinand II of Aragon (reign 1479–1516). Their reigns marked a turning point in Iberian politics, culminating in the [conquest](https://www.worldhistory.org/warfare/) of Granada in 1492 and the completion of the [Reconquista](https://www.worldhistory.org/Reconquista/). In the same year, the voyage of [Christopher Columbus](https://www.worldhistory.org/Christopher_Columbus/) initiated sustained European expansion into the Americas, laying the foundations of a transoceanic [empire](https://www.worldhistory.org/empire/). During the 16th century, Spain’s monarchy governed territories across the Iberian Peninsula, the Americas, and parts of [Europe](https://www.worldhistory.org/europe/), integrating diverse regions through royal administration, maritime [trade](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/trade/) networks, and colonial institutions.

Spain’s imperial reach reached its greatest extent under Charles V (as Charles I of Spain, reign 1516–1556) and [Philip II](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Philip_II/) of Spain (reign 1556–1598), when Habsburg rule connected Europe with overseas territories from the Netherlands and southern [Italy](https://www.worldhistory.org/italy/) to Peru and the Philippines. Yet the maintenance of such a vast empire placed growing demands on royal finances and military resources. Prolonged conflicts, including the Eighty Years’ [War](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/War/) and repeated wars with rival European powers, combined with fiscal crises and demographic pressures. By the reign of Charles II of Spain (reign 1665–1700), Spain’s relative dominance had weakened, and the monarch’s [death](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Death/) without an heir precipitated the [War of the Spanish Succession](https://www.worldhistory.org/War_of_the_Spanish_Succession/), signaling a broader shift in the European balance of power.
