A French noble and brother-in-[law](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/law/) to the [Marquis de Lafayette](https://www.worldhistory.org/Gilbert_du_Motier_Marquis_de_Lafayette/), Noailles fought in the [American Revolutionary War](https://www.worldhistory.org/American_Revolutionary_War/). His speech before the National Assembly on the night of 4 August 1789 led to the [August Decrees](https://www.worldhistory.org/August_Decrees/), which abolished [feudalism](https://www.worldhistory.org/Feudalism/) in France.
