## Image Caption

The White Tower is the symbol of [Thessaloniki](https://www.worldhistory.org/Thessalonica/), [Greece](https://www.worldhistory.org/greece/). During the Ottoman occupation of the [city](https://www.worldhistory.org/city/), it was used as a prison. The White Tower was constructed in the 15th century, following the Ottoman [conquest](https://www.worldhistory.org/warfare/) of Thessaloniki in 1430. The tower was presented to the Ministry of [Culture](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/culture/) in 1983.
