## Image Caption

A depiction of the evolution of the first imperial dynasty of ancient [Rome](https://www.worldhistory.org/Rome/), the Julio-Claudians that began with [Augustus](https://www.worldhistory.org/augustus/) ([Julius Caesar](https://www.worldhistory.org/Julius_Caesar/)'s adopted son) and included the reigns of [Tiberius](https://www.worldhistory.org/Tiberius/), [Caligula](https://www.worldhistory.org/Caligula/), [Claudius](https://www.worldhistory.org/claudius/), and [Nero](https://www.worldhistory.org/Nero/). During their time, Rome was at the height of its wealth, power, and sophistication, reaching a truly golden age of [literature](https://www.worldhistory.org/literature/) and arts, but at the same time, it was plagued by imperial excess and infamy. The [Julio-Claudian dynasty](https://www.worldhistory.org/collection/111/julio-claudian-dynasty/) claimed to trace its roots as far back as [Romulus and Remus](https://www.worldhistory.org/Romulus_and_Remus/) (the twins of legend who established the [city](https://www.worldhistory.org/city/)) and the oldest families of Rome; they claimed ancestry from two deities and the Trojan hero [Aeneas](https://www.worldhistory.org/Aeneas/). Ironically, although they considered themselves a family dynasty, no Julio-Claudian managed to leave imperial power to a son of their own.
