## Image Caption

An 1882 oil on canvas, *Two [Women](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/women/) in a Loge*, by [Mary Cassatt](https://www.worldhistory.org/Mary_Cassatt/) (1844-1926), the American impressionist painter. The two young girls here at the opera are connected by the large painted fan, a fashionable addition to a lady's attire in this period and one which used to attract an admirer's eye. The work is also a nod to Cassatt's fellow impressionists who often eked out a living selling painted fans when their canvases could not find buyers. Cassatt has a mirror behind the girls which reflects the back of the figure on the right and the balconies of the [theatre](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/theatre/).
