[Chandragupta Maurya](https://www.worldhistory.org/Chandragupta_Maurya/), the first ruler, seized the opportunity created by the power vacuum of [Alexander the Great](https://www.worldhistory.org/Alexander_the_Great/)’s [death](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Death/) to consolidate and expand the territory, while three generations later, emperor [Ashoka](https://www.worldhistory.org/Ashoka_the_Great/) turned to [Buddhism](https://www.worldhistory.org/buddhism/) and left his [mark](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Mark/) on history by inscribing numerous edicts (many of them encouraging peace and nonviolence) in stone.
