Jean-François de Surville (1717-1770) was a French explorer and merchant captain. He sailed with the French [India](https://www.worldhistory.org/india/) Company before serving in the French navy during the Seven Years' [War](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/War/) (1756–1763). In 1767, he commanded the French ship *St Jean Baptiste* on a mission to locate Davis Land in the Pacific (reported to lie west of Peru). Due to scurvy and sickness, de Surville headed down the 35th parallel towards where it was hoped New Zealand would lie. Jean-François de Surville arrived off Northland, New Zealand in December, 1769. By coincidence, Captain James Cook's (1728-1779) *Endeavour* was sailing the opposite coast of Northland at the same time.
