## Image Caption

An 1876 oil on canvas, *Portraits in the Country*, by [Gustave Caillebotte](https://www.worldhistory.org/Gustave_Caillebotte/) (1848-96) the French impressionist painter. Members of the artist's family at Yerres, the family estate, the lady on the far right is Caillebotte's mother and the others are a cousin, aunt, and friend. Moving from left to right as the figures recede, Caillebotte creates one of his trademark diagonals, leading the viewer's eye into the heart of the picture. (Musée Baron Gérard, Bayeux, France)
