An 1869 oil on canvas, *La Grenouillère*, by [Pierre-Auguste Renoir](https://www.worldhistory.org/Pierre-Auguste_Renoir/) (1841-1919), the French impressionist painter. Renoir and [Claude Monet](https://www.worldhistory.org/Claude_Monet/) (1840-1926) spent time working together near the Seine at Croissy – a weekend destination for fashionable Parisians – perfecting their new impressionist technique. Painted outdoors, Renoir here uses a wide variety of small brushstrokes. Monet painted exactly the same scene, but Renoir's figures are more detailed, revealing his general preference for figures over landscapes. (National Museum, Stockholm)
