## Image Caption

A 1901 oil on canvas still life, *Sunflowers in an Armchair*, by [Paul Gauguin](https://www.worldhistory.org/Paul_Gauguin/) (1848-1903), the French post-impressionist painter. Gauguin had asked for seeds of sunflowers to be sent to him from [Europe](https://www.worldhistory.org/europe/) so that he could grow the flowers in his garden in Tahiti. Gauguin painted four similar still lifes, and one is tempted to think he was feeling nostalgic for his time in France and Arles where he so admired [Vincent van Gogh](https://www.worldhistory.org/Vincent_van_Gogh/)'s (1853-1890) sunflower paintings.
