## Image Caption

An 1887 oil on canvas, *Martinique Landscape* (aka *Tropical Vegetation*), by [Paul Gauguin](https://www.worldhistory.org/Paul_Gauguin/) (1848-1903) the French post-impressionist painter. Although disappointed at the Europeanization of the Caribbean island, the artist was impressed with the colours and density of the tropical vegetation. (Scottish National Gallery, Edinburgh)
