The war erupted after [Julius Caesar](https://www.worldhistory.org/Julius_Caesar/) crossed the [Rubicon](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Rubicon/) in 49 BCE in defiance of the Senate, challenging the authority of his former ally and rival [Pompey](https://www.worldhistory.org/pompey/) and the senatorial faction aligned against him. [Caesar](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/caesar/)’s rise followed years of military expansion during the Gallic Wars (58-50 BCE), which brought vast territories under Roman control and greatly increased his personal prestige, wealth, and political influence. What began as a constitutional and political crisis rapidly expanded into a [Mediterranean](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/mediterranean/)-wide struggle fought across [Italy](https://www.worldhistory.org/italy/), [Greece](https://www.worldhistory.org/greece/), [Asia Minor](https://www.worldhistory.org/Asia_Minor/), [Egypt](https://www.worldhistory.org/egypt/), North [Africa](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/africa/), and Hispania. Major engagements included the [Battle](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/battle/) of Pharsalos (48 BCE), where Pompey was defeated, the Alexandrian War (48-47 BCE), the Battle of Zela (47 BCE), the Battle of Thapsus (46 BCE), and the final Caesarian victory at Munda (45 BCE). Beneath the campaigns lay deeper structural tensions within the late Republic: competition between powerful generals, weakening republican institutions, economic inequality, and the increasing use of military force in politics. Although Caesar emerged victorious and was appointed dictator perpetuo in 44 BCE, he was assassinated by senators later that year in an attempt to restore the Republic.
