An 1888 oil on canvas, *First Spring Flowers*, by [Paul Gauguin](https://www.worldhistory.org/Paul_Gauguin/) (1848-1903) the French post-impressionist painter. Back in France after his visit to the Caribbean, the artist has returned to a more impressionist palette and style but uses his own technique such as the almost exclusive use of vertical brushstrokes.
