## Image Caption

An 1885 oil on canvas, *Beach, Dieppe*, by [Paul Gauguin](https://www.worldhistory.org/Paul_Gauguin/) (1848-1903) the French post-impressionist painter. An archetypal impressionist take on a summer view showing bathers and sailing boats on the Normandy coast, this work shows the influence of [Claude Monet](https://www.worldhistory.org/Claude_Monet/) (1840-1926). The unusual square format may have been the request of a commission. (Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, Copenhagen)
