## Image Caption

An 1892 oil on burlap mounted on canvas, *Manao Tupapau* (The Spirit of the Dead Watching), by [Paul Gauguin](https://www.worldhistory.org/Paul_Gauguin/) (1848-1903) the French post-impressionist painter. Painted in Polynesia, the artist considered this one of his most important works. He was inspired by a real-life incident and the local legends of the Tupapaus, demons or spirits which prowl during sleepless nights. (Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, USA)
