## Image Caption

An 1888 oil on canvas self-portrait by [Paul Gauguin](https://www.worldhistory.org/Paul_Gauguin/) (1848-1903) the French post-impressionist painter. Painted in Arles in southern France. The portrait on the [wall](https://www.worldhistory.org/wall/) behind Gauguin is of the artist Émile Bernard, and the text below reads "*Les* *Miserables*", a reference to Victor Hugo's novel, the main character of which is an outcast and failed artist.
