An 1870 oil on canvas landscape, *The Road to Louveciennes*, by [Camille Pissarro](https://www.worldhistory.org/Camille_Pissarro/) (1830-1903), the Danish-French impressionist painter. The simple composition and colour tones are typical of the artist's work in this period. He painted many views of Louveciennes, often omitting trees or moving them to harmonize his composition. Pissarro lived in Louveciennes from 1869 but had to abandon his home during the Franco-Prussian [War](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/War/) of 1870. When he returned, he found most of his canvases destroyed, including his pioneering impressionist works. (Musée d'Orsay, [Paris](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/paris/))
