# Place du Théâtre Français by Pissarro

An 1898 oil on canvas, *Place du Théâtre Français*, by [Camille Pissarro](https://www.worldhistory.org/Camille_Pissarro/) (1830-1903), the Danish-French impressionist painter. The artist painted many scenes of [Paris](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/paris/) in this later stage of his career. Many, as here, lack a horizon or well-defined border to the action. This and the elevated viewpoint suggest to the viewer – which, of course, is the case in reality – that they are only seeing a small snapshot of a busy [city](https://www.worldhistory.org/city/) as people enter and exit the scene. This view could be seen from the hotel where Pissarro stayed, the Hôtel du Louvre. (Los Angeles County Museum of Art)
