An 1897 oil on canvas, *Boulevard Montmartre Night Effect*, by [Camille Pissarro](https://www.worldhistory.org/Camille_Pissarro/) (1830-1903), the Danish-French impressionist painter. Pissarro very rarely painted night scenes, but here he captures Émile Zola's famous description of [Paris](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/paris/) by night as "an orgy of [gold](https://www.worldhistory.org/gold/) and [women](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/women/)". The yellow lights are made even more impressionistic by having the streets wet with rain. (National Gallery, London)
