## Image Caption

An 1870 oil on canvas, *The Beach at Trouville*, by [Claude Monet](https://www.worldhistory.org/Claude_Monet/) (1840-1926), the French impressionist painter. Trouville in Normandy was a popular and fashionable resort. The work shows the artist's developing impressionist style and the particles of sand in the paint show that it was painted *en plein air*.
