## Image Caption

An 1884 oil on canvas, *Villas in Bordighera*, by [Claude Monet](https://www.worldhistory.org/Claude_Monet/) (1840-1926), the French impressionist painter. The artist visited the south of France and Liguria in [Italy](https://www.worldhistory.org/italy/) in 1883-4 and was fascinated by the [Mediterranean](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/mediterranean/) light and colours. At Bordighera alone, he produced 50 paintings and used a noticeably brighter palette than previously in his career. (Santa Barbara Museum of Art, California)
