An 1872 oil on canvas, *Impression, Sunrise*, by [Claude Monet](https://www.worldhistory.org/Claude_Monet/) (1840-1926), the French impressionist painter. The work shows Le Havre at sunrise. Critics reacted negatively to the painting, considering it vague and unfinished. The title was used by one critic to [coin](https://www.worldhistory.org/coinage/) the term '[impressionism](https://www.worldhistory.org/Impressionism/)', then a derogatory label for this new kind of art.
