An 1889 pastel on paper, *In Front of the Mirror*, by [Edgar Degas](https://www.worldhistory.org/Edgar_Degas/) (1834-1917), the French impressionist painter. This work covers several themes that interested the artist towards the end of his career: [women](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/women/) at their toilette, women putting on hats, the use of a mirror in the scene to distort the space, a distinctive cropping of the scene, and having the viewer seemingly very close to the subject.
