A c. 1869 pastel work, *Houses Beside the Sea*, by [Edgar Degas](https://www.worldhistory.org/Edgar_Degas/) (1834-1917), the French impressionist painter. Less-known for his landscapes, Degas often uses them almost as an exercise in presenting a harmony of tonal colours. Other features of his landscapes are that they are frequently hazy and do not show people. This work was created on the northern coast of France when the artist visited Villers-sur-Mer and Dives-sur-Mer in Normandy.
