## Image Caption

Woodcut image of the execution of [William Tyndale](https://www.worldhistory.org/William_Tyndale/) (c. 1494-1536) from Foxe's Book of Martyrs (1563). Tyndale was first strangled, in recognition of his standing as a scholar, and then his corpse was burned at the stake. His last words were a prayer, "Lord, Open the King of [England](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/england/)'s Eyes!" in reference to the prohibition on translating the [Bible](https://www.worldhistory.org/bible/) into English.
