The scene shows a busy office with 13 people, including buyers, brokers, and office layabouts, and, in the centre, a long central table layered with cotton. The artist was visiting family in New Orleans, and he thought this subject might sell well in [England](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/england/), perhaps to a wealthy mill owner.
