A c. 1875 oil on canvas painting, *Before the [Theatre](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/theatre/)*, by [Berthe Morisot](https://www.worldhistory.org/Berthe_Morisot/) (1841-95), the French impressionist painter. Not considered a self-portrait. Here can be seen, perhaps, the influence of Morisot's good friend [Edouard Manet](https://www.worldhistory.org/Edouard_Manet/) (1832-1883) in the choice of black as the dominating colour. The impressionist style, however, is entirely Morisot's. (Private Collection)
