## Image Caption

An 1879 oil on canvas painting, *Summer's Day*, by [Berthe Morisot](https://www.worldhistory.org/Berthe_Morisot/) (1841-95), the French impressionist painter. This is a scene of the artificial boating lake in the Bois de Boulogne, [Paris](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/paris/), then a popular weekend spot for the capital's fashionable bourgeoise. This work was shown at the Fifth Impressionist Exhibition in Paris in 1880. (National Gallery, London)
