## Image Caption

An 1888 oil on canvas painting, *Pink Peach Trees*, by [Vincent van Gogh](https://www.worldhistory.org/Vincent_van_Gogh/) (1853-90), the Dutch post-impressionist artist. Painted in the spring shortly after Vincent had arrived in the south of France. Fascinated by the colours and light of Provence, the artist painted a series of canvases with blossom trees as their subject. As he stated in a letter to his brother Theo, "I am using up an enormous amount of canvases and paints" (LT 474F). There is a dedication in the bottom left corner, 'Souvenir de Mauve,' which references Vincent's artist cousin Anton Mauve (a prominent member of The Hague School), who he studied under in The Hague. Cousin Mauve died a few weeks before this painting was made. (Kröller-Müller Museum, Otterlo, The Netherlands)
