## Image Caption

An 1879 oil on canvas painting, *The Café-Concert*, by [Edouard Manet](https://www.worldhistory.org/Edouard_Manet/) (1832-83), the French modernist painter. The setting here is the Brasserie de Reichsoffen in [Paris](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/paris/). As is typical of Manet's café scenes, the two central figures seem uncommunicative. The woman is perhaps a little tipsy and the man, who is much older and rather overdressed, watches the bustle of the brasserie with interest. The waitress taking a quick drink adds a photo-like immediacy to the scene. (Walters Art Museum, Baltimore, U.S.A)
