## Image Caption

An 1876-7 oil on canvas painting, *Nana*, by [Edouard Manet](https://www.worldhistory.org/Edouard_Manet/) (1832-83), the French modernist painter. Another painting that shocked the Establishment as Manet shows off an obvious courtesan. Manet's model for Nana was Henriette Haser, mistress of the Prince of Orange. Predictably, the work was rejected by the conservative [Paris](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/paris/) Salon in 1877, but then a dealer showed it in his window, and there it caused notoriety and a public disturbance that necessitated the intervention of the police. Typical Manet features are Nana ignoring the gentleman and the sharp cut-off of half of the latter figure. (Hamburger Kunsthalle, Hamburg, Germany)
