## Image Caption

An 1874 oil on canvas painting, *Argenteuil*, by [Edouard Manet](https://www.worldhistory.org/Edouard_Manet/) (1832-83), the French modernist painter. Painted at Argenteuil on the Seine. It was painted when Manet was working alongside [Claude Monet](https://www.worldhistory.org/Claude_Monet/), and the lighter palette than usual is noticeable. Once again, the relationship between Manet's figures is a mystery as the woman stares off into space, yet she remains physically close to the man. The unusual cutting of the scene, particularly at the bottom, reminds of Japanese prints. The work was exhibited in the 1874 [Paris](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/paris/) Salon. (Musée des Beaux-Arts, Tournai, Belgium)
