An 1872 oil on canvas portrait, *[Berthe Morisot](https://www.worldhistory.org/Berthe_Morisot/) with a Bouquet of Violets*, by [Edouard Manet](https://www.worldhistory.org/Edouard_Manet/) (1832-83), the French modernist painter. Morisot, a noted impressionist painter in her own right, was a favourite subject of Manet's. This example shows the artist's love of black which he uses to frame the sitter's face.
