A c. 1862 oil on canvas painting, *Fishing*, by [Edouard Manet](https://www.worldhistory.org/Edouard_Manet/) (1832-83), the French modernist painter. The couple on the right is the artist and his then mistress Suzanne Leenhoff. The work shows the artist's interest in painters like Peter [Paul](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Paul/) Rubens (1577-1640) in the early part of his career. The work was exhibited in St. Petersburg. (Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York)
