## Image Caption

An 1860 oil on canvas painting, *The Spanish Singer*, by [Edouard Manet](https://www.worldhistory.org/Edouard_Manet/) (1832-83), the French modernist painter. The subject is here painted in a conservative style and, consequently, it was accepted by the Salon of [Paris](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/paris/) in 1861 and won a commendation. The work shows the influence of Spanish art and [culture](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/culture/) on Manet long before he ever visited the country. The use of props is evident - the left-handed musician is playing a guitar strung for someone right-handed. (Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York)
