An 1881-2 painting in oils, *Portrait of the Artist's Son*, by [Paul Cézanne](https://www.worldhistory.org/Paul_Cezanne/) (1839-1906), the French post-impressionist artist. Cézanne's son, also called [Paul](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Paul/) (b. 1872), is here around nine years old. He was a frequent sitter for his father, no easy task as the artist often insisted on remaining motionless and not speaking for several [hours](https://www.worldhistory.org/Horae/) at a sitting. Unusually, the artist uses thin paint and very fine brush strokes for this portrait. (Musée de l'Orangerie, [Paris](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/paris/))
