Lake Nasser (also known as Lake Nubia) is a vast reservoir on the [Nile](https://www.worldhistory.org/nile/) River in southern [Egypt](https://www.worldhistory.org/egypt/) and northern Sudan. It was created by the impounding of the Nile’s waters by the Aswan High Dam, which was built in the 1960s. It is one of the largest man-made lakes in the world, covering a total surface area of 5,250 km2 (2,030 sq mi). The creation of Lake Nasser threatened to submerge a number of significant historical sites, notably Philae and [Abu Simbel](https://www.worldhistory.org/Abu_Simbel/), under its waters. Under a colossal international project coordinated by UNESCO, the ancient monuments of Nubia were dismantled and reconstructed on safer ground.
