A c. 1873 still life painting in oils, *Still Life with Italian Earthenware Jar*, by [Paul Cézanne](https://www.worldhistory.org/Paul_Cezanne/) (1839-1906), the French post-impressionist artist. This painting shows the transition from [impressionism](https://www.worldhistory.org/Impressionism/) with its emphasis on atmospheric tones to post-impressionism and more intense colouring. This was painted while the artist stayed with Dr. Gachet, a collector and supporter of the impressionists who was famously captured by his patient [Vincent van Gogh](https://www.worldhistory.org/Vincent_van_Gogh/). (Private Collection)
