An 1867 painting in oils, *The Clearing*, by [Paul Cézanne](https://www.worldhistory.org/Paul_Cezanne/) (1839-1906), the French post-impressionist artist. One of the clearest indications of the influence of [impressionism](https://www.worldhistory.org/Impressionism/) on Cézanne. The artist is using a broader range of colours and shades to achieve his effects and create spatial depth. (Private Collection)
