## Image Caption

A c. 1866 still life in oils, *Sugar Bowl, Pears, and Blue Cup*, by [Paul Cézanne](https://www.worldhistory.org/Paul_Cezanne/) (1839-1906), the French post-impressionist artist. The dark background, vibrant and contrasting colours, and thick application of paint with a palette knife are all typical of Cézanne's early work. (Musée Granet, Aix-en-Provence, France)
