## Image Caption

A c. 1898 landscape in oils, *Bridge Across the Pond*, by [Paul Cézanne](https://www.worldhistory.org/Paul_Cezanne/) (1839-1906), the French post-impressionist artist. The work is an example of Cézanne's preoccupation with representing the underlying essence or structure of Nature rather than showing it at a particular moment in a particular light. The precise use of brushstrokes in multiple directions and layers is typical of the artist in this period, as is the use of multiple colour shades and tones. (Museum of Fine Arts, Moscow)
