A statue of John Hampden in Aylesbury, [England](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/england/). In 1637, Hampden famously challenged the legality of the [Ship Money](https://www.worldhistory.org/Ship_Money/) tax levied by [Charles I of England](https://www.worldhistory.org/Charles_I_of_England/) (r. 1625-1649).
