## Image Caption

The frontispiece of the *Eikon Basilike* (first published in 1649) showing the late King [Charles I of England](https://www.worldhistory.org/Charles_I_of_England/) (r. 1625-1649). The king, executed by Parliament during the [English Civil Wars](https://www.worldhistory.org/English_Civil_Wars/) (1642-51), is here shown kneeling and holding forth a crown of thorns and is represented as the embodiment of a Christian monarch who rules in [God](https://www.worldhistory.org/God/)'s name and with his guidance.
