The Council of Chalcedon was called in 451 by the [Roman Emperor](https://www.worldhistory.org/Roman_Emperor/) Marcian to settle debates that had begun at two earlier meetings in [Ephesus](https://www.worldhistory.org/ephesos/) (431, 439). Various Bishops were debating the nature (hypostases, “reality”) of Christ.
